Queen Elizabeth II cancels Northern Ireland trip on medical advice

Over recent weeks the Queen has hosted several receptions and visited the parliaments of Edinburgh and Cardiff but Buckingham Palace has confirmed she is following medical advice to rest after cancelling her trip to Northern Ireland. The advice by royal doctors to rest before the Platinum Jubilee next year has come as a shock as the Queen was not seen to have problems with recent outings. The Queen is said to be reluctant to follow the advice as the visit to Northern Ireland was a significant visit, having been it has been five years since she has been to the region. The Queen was due to attend a service marking the centenary of the partition between Northern Ireland and Ireland and the formation of Northern Ireland. The event has been shunned by Irish President Michael D Higgins who has said he will not go.
